Hitmen Beat Ice. Bears Everywhere

The Saddle Dome was packed this afternoon. Sadly the majority of people there weren't real hockey fans. Just people there to throw teddy bears on the ice. These two fat women behind me were arguing about where the Ice played. One kept saying Cranbrook the other was giving her shit saying no they play in Kootenay. I know times can be tough but I am pretty sure even on welfare a person would be able to afford to buy a teddy bear for a child at Christmas. You want to make a kids Christmas next season have the Xbox throw. Could you imagine 19,000 fans hucking Xbox's and Play Station 3's onto the ice.
The Hitmen came on strong right out of the gate.Every player looked hungry to be the one to score that first goal. They should almost have Teddy Bear night every game. They had a ton of chances. Mackenzie Skapski made some terrific saves his defencmen were nice enough to allow him to have so many shots. Why go to goalie school when your defence can just be lazy and give you all the practise you need in the game right? Then with just over 6 minutes remaining in the first Padakin scored on a beautiful pass from Macek. Then down came the bears, thousands of them. Then I assumed that they would of put a bulldozer on the front of the trucks and pushed them all out of the rink. But they brought bags out and the Hitmen and volunteers bagged them. Then after that they cleaned the ice, then finished the period, then had a 2 minute break, and started the second period.
In the second period exactly 2 minutes in Alex Roach scored his 7th of the year from Macek and Jones. 8 Seconds later Rissling and Mike Simpson dropped the gloves. Rissling got the upper hand in that one. Laterin the second period Brock Montgomery put the ice up on the board with a goal assisted from Sam Reinhart. Montgomery scored a hat trick against the Hitmen last time the Ice were here in their 4-0 win.
Then in the third period Greg Chase got a pair of almost identical goals from the left side of Skapski at the hashmarks to make it 4-1.

Then with just under a minute left in the game Hurley added insult to injury to his old team by dropping the gloves with Jagger Dirk. The Hitmen played well very well. The Ice played as they look on paper and not like a great team the last time they were at the Dome. They are young and its going to be  a long season. Skapski had a solid game in net for the Ice.
Next up is in Cranbrook on Tuesday..

Blades Beat Hitmen

I have read so much stuff on the internet about how the Blades suck shit and are a horrible team. But look at the roster. There are a lot of great players or appear to be on paper. The Blades had really high expectations coming into the season being a Memorial Cup host team. There has even been talk about not letting the Blades participate in the Memorial Cup if their record continues to be as horrible as it has been. After watching them beat Calgary last night 4-0 there is a whack load of great things to say about this team and only one visible downfall that I along with the people sitting around me noticed.
Goaltender Andre Makarov was fantastic. Its not like the shut out was just handed to him on a silver platter he made great saves. Forwards Stransky, Nicholls, and McColgan were dominate and very entertaining to watch every shift they were out there. 16 year old forward Matt Revel was amazing and is looking like a potential 1st round pick in 2014. Pretty amazing the kid was passed up in the 2011 bantam draft and acquired by the Blades as a list player. Dietz is also a better defencman than Siemens something I would of never thought which just goes to show never form opinions until you have actually watched teams play. Also never form opinions on from what you just see on paper ie stats. All in all the Blades look like a great team and there record doesn't show it. Rumours have circulated via the interweb and so called gossip which is a shit way to form an opinion.
Being a Jets fan I was also a little disappointed in the play of Lukas Sutter. He could of had an off night just not something I would of expected from a second round pick but then again when I seen the Broncos Lowry play awhile back I thought the same thing.
To the one thing that looked so visible to holding the Blades back and almost making the team look like a laughing stock. One minute small thing is captain Brendan Walker. Don't let the garbage goal and 2 assists (one on Revels first goal which almost looked like after the puck went in Walker made a point to go up to the ref to make sure he got the assist) fool you. This kid is horrible. I don't know if it was watching him in warm up take massive pee wee wind up slap shots at his goalie from inside the hash marks or the way the 2 year old shuffles his feet with one hand on the stick when he skates. What the hell is he doing out there? Most over rated over hyped player I have ever seen in sports period. He got a bunch of ice time he didn't deserve and I can not believe any sane person would pencil him into a WHL roster let alone let him wear a letter on his jersey. I have seen numerous players play where I shake my head at but this kid gave me neck cramps. Trade him a way for a few water bottles and the Blades will have no issues being memorial cup contenders.
The Blades better do something this year because with a roster chalked full of 19 year olds the next few seasons may be a little rough minus the presence of Revel.
The stars were Revel, Makarov, and McColgan and that was bang on in the order they should of been.

Hitmen Cruise By The Tigers

No Shinkaruk and no Valk for the Tigers last night in Calgary. The Hitmen actually decided to show up last night too. Beating the Tigers 4-1. It would of been a lot nicer to match the embarrassment that the Tigers handed to them last time. Oh not the Tigers I meant Shinkaruk and Valk. The 2 of them combined for 5 points a piece last time in a 10-1 shit kicking.
Victor Rask opened up the scoring for the Hitmen and is finally starting to look like a player that was just sent down from an AHL team not a midget call up player like he did in the first couple games when he came back. He had a great night all around.
Then in the second period Cody Sylvester got a beautiful shorthanded goal upper glove side and then a power play goal to make the score 3-0. Then 2 minutes later Pavol Padakin made that Yugoslavian (goalie or where ever he is from) Linkhammer (or whatever) look stupid by scoring an effortless beauty. That was the last we seen of Lankhummer for the night as he went to the bench.
Pearce scored for Medicine Hat on the PP to make it 4-1 which the game ended. As for fights Spencer Humphries took on Jacob Doty . Have to hand it to Humphries for taking on a guy Doty's size. Doty though looks like he may of taken the short bus to school and I thought Humphries would of done a little better. Doty gets the win but Humphries did alright.
Also in the game Darian Henry took a hard shot to which appeared to be his neck and had to leave the game. They showed it on replay and it looks like it could be bad. Hope he is alright. I want to see him take on Doty next time they play the Tigers.

Then there was some drunk guy in the stands wearing a Tigers jersey with the old goalie Bunz name bar on the back. It appeared as if he was going to fight the mascot Farley at one point in the game. I would imagine 75% of people attending Hitmen games at one point or another have contemplated punching that mascot a time or two. But the problem is what if it is a woman or a mentally challenged person.
3 stars Sylvester (3 points), Rask (1 goal, 1 assist), Driedger (24 saves).
Next game against Saskatoon Nov 30th.

Hitmen Edge Hurricanes

Garbage goals aplenty for the Hitmen on Wednesday night. But when Rimjob faces almost 50 shots he is bound to let in a few. First goal Rissling bounced it off a defender Rimjob had no chance. 2nd goal was probably one of the most embarassing that Rimmer let in. Alex Roach let off a horrible slap shot just inside the blue line and it trickled past Rimmer. So slowly in fact he actually got to turn around and watch it go in the net on him like a slow motion video replay. Then when the game was tied at 2 with less than 30 seconds left Jake Virtanen scored from an awkward angle to net the winner.
As for the Hurricanes. You ever wondered why they are called the Hurricanes? Sure it is windy in Lethbridge but they can not get a hurricane there. Sort of like Medicine Hat calling themselves the Tigers when there are no tigers there as  they have no zoo. Also Kelowna Rockets as I do not believe that Kelowna has a space program. Anyway.
Lethbridge as boring as the roster may appear and in seasons before watching them are actually a very entertaining team to watch. Also not this year but next year and the year after will probably be one of the power houses of the WHL. They have 3 of the best 16 year olds I have seen in the league (next to Point in Moose Jaw) With Duke, Wong, and Pilon.
For the Hurricanes both goals looked awesome first goal Axle Bloomqvist the 17 year old Swede listed at 6'5 but appears 7'5 recieved an amazing spin pass from Reid Duke. And the second goal was a nice slot shot from Tyler Wong his first career WHL goal. Duke and Wong (Sounds like a British Chinese Restaurant) looked awesome out there. I was shocked to see on the stats sheet that they didn't have more points this season the way they were playing.
As for fights Padakin attempted to fight Macoy Erkamps. He is Russian what do you expect. Erkamps shit canned him. Then Harrison Harper laid a knee and Kenton Helgesen went after him and they had an even toe to toe match.
Next up for the Hitmen are the Tigers who are on a 5 game losing streak. Hopefully the Hitmen can get a little redemption after their last meeting getting shit kicked 10-1 by the Shinkaruk-Valk show.

Hitmen edge Swift Current

The Swift Current Broncos lost 4-2 to the Calgary Hitmen but no need to worry Bronco faithful you guys are still in second place in which appears to be the crappiest division in the history of junior hockey. So you can still smile and your team can suck as bad as they want and odds are you will still find a way to squeak into the playoffs. Next to the Prince Albert Raiders you guys don't even have a hockey team in your whole division.
The Broncos came out flat with no fuel. The most effort I seen from them at the beginning of the game is when Adam Lowry skated onto the ice for warm up took a hard shot and then coasted. One Bronco player that did look like he was giving er well was #18 Daniel Dale but then I looked at the score sheet and seen he hasn't had a point in 24 games and was probably on the bubble of getting cut or being sent down to Maple Creek Jr.D then I never seen him after the first period and then thought he probably left the game to go and get a haircut. Which is too bad because I really wanted to see him fight.
Anyway back to the game. Cody Sylvester scored a beautiful goal halfway through the first period assisted from Greg Chase and Brady Brassart to put the Hitmen up 1-0. Then Finlandnavian goalie put in some effort to stop it but ultimately fell during the puck going into the net.
Then with 2 minutes remaining in the 1st Adam Lowry decided to try his skills at fighting with Spencer Humphries. Lets just say the UFC is not going to be calling on Lowry's door step anytime soon. Since he is a Winnipeg draft pick make sure in the future if he plays there to not go down in the North end unaccompanied. Humphries pumpelled him. Stick to scoring goals Adam.
The second period was fairly uneventful although young Josh Thrower of the Hitmen got into a scrap with Chance Lund who is old enough to be Throwers father. Thrower held his own and did well.
Then in the 3rd Pavol Padakin made it 2-0 for the Hitmen while shorthanded. With an assist from Samoridny. Then less than a minute later Graham Black realized that he was in a hockey game and scored. Then 5 minutes later he scored again. At this point it was starting to look like a real game. Then we had 2 more fights with Nedomlel fighting Rissling and Reum fighting Helgesen. Then a little over a minute later Peter Kosterman scored on a beautiful shot from the hashmark with assists to Rask and Macek. And to seal the game Padakin got his second of the night on an empty need from Jake Virtanen.
Also at the end you had your usual Darian Henry riling up the other team and Bronco Josh Derko got a 10 minute misconduct because of it. I love watching Henry play out there he just pisses the other team off And then skates a way with this funny looking grin on his face.
Basically an easy win for the Hitmen even though they played like crap. Next game is in Lethbridge on Tuesday and then back at the dome for Wednesday to face them again.
As for the Broncos have fun in Edmonton tommorow night thats all I can say.

Kootenay Sucks?

Dah dah dah KOOTENAY SUCKS the Saddledome yells out last night during a 4-0 embarasment lose by your eastern division leaders to the team in dead last in the standings in the whole Western Hockey League. It didn't look as stupid when the crowd was yelling it after Brock Montgomerry scored in the first 21 seconds of the opening face off. Even after his second goal just a while later. But once he burried the Hat Trick to ensure the Ice a 3-0 lead it started to look dumb.
The Ice over the night almost doubled the Hitmen in shots (34-17) and the Hitmen gave back up goalie Mack Shields no help what so ever during the whole game. While Mackenzie Skapski sat at the other end and got an easy shutout which he probably never expected to get that easy on the bus ride over to Calgary.
The Hitmen should all start adding ov's to the end of their names as they really are starting to play like Russian players in the way it looks like they show up when they want to.
Zach McPhee also got a goal with an empty netter. Sam Reinhart and Jaden Descheneau also each got a pair of assists each.
Fights: Hegelsen and Wand. Mike Simpson and Spencer Humphries had a great fight  after Humphries got upset that Simpson laid a clean hit on Brendan Hurley.
So basically the Hitmen snapped a 5 game winning streak against the last place team. The youngest team in the WHL. Which was missing 3 of their better players (Philp, Benoit, and Boyd). Wonder what the bag skate was like after that game?
